Jay - Silver on the Road at Worlds
Australia finished the UCI Junior Road World Championships in Offida, Italy on a successful note after Queensland’s Jay McCarthy collected the silver medal in the men’s road race.
The reigning Australian U19 road race champion led home a chasing bunch for second place three seconds behind winner Olivier Le Gac (FRA) who won the 128km race in a time of 3:32:05.
Le Gac had attacked from the lead group on the toughest climb of the 16km circuit when the race was in the last of eight laps.
McCarthy's team mate Calvin Watson from Victoria crossed the line in sixth place also at three seconds.
The medal was consolation for McCarthy who missed out on the podium in Friday's time trial after he crashed when an official event motorbike stopped in the middle of a corner in front of him leaving him nowhere to go.
South Australia's Damien Howson finished 14 seconds adrift of the winner in 22nd position while NSW rider Samuel Spokes did not finish.
In the women's event France was again victorious through Pauline Ferrand Prevot who sprinted home for the win ahead of Italian Rossella Ratto with American Coryn Rivera third. All three finished in the same time of 2:31:47 for the 80km race.
West Australian Jessica Allen was the highest placed Australian finisher crossing the line in 15th place at 2:43. Queensland's Maddison Vit was 29th at 5:43. Victorian Stephanie Hansen did not finish.
Earlier in the week Tasmania's Amy Cure placed third in a close battle for the medals in the women's time trial. On a undulating course that didn’t play to her strengths, the 17 year old impressed. She clocked a time 12.3 seconds slower than Ukrainian Canna Solovei who successfully defended her crown. The silver medal, for the second year in a row, went to French rider, Pauline Ferrand Prevot who was only 5.13 seconds off the pace of the winner.
Australia finished the road competition with a total of two medals through the silver of McCarthy and the bronze medal claimed by Cure.
Dual World Champion Returns From Italy
Jordan Kerby will return home to Hervey Bay this week with a little extra luggage. He will have in tow the greatest prize available to an Under 19 cyclist- not one but two World Championship Jerseys.
Kerby, now a full time Cyclist, will return from Italy where competition has just wrapped up in the 2010 World Track Championships. The World Championship are the pinnacle of achievement for an Under 19 cyclist attracting all the powerhouse cycling nations with the Australian Team dominating the meet.
Kerby was crowned World Champion in the Teams Pursuit and Points race. He narrowly missed a medal in the Madison where he placed 4th and had to settle for 6th in the Scratch race. To reach the finals the 18 year old had to navigate through the heats of each event requiring a careful balance of effort and tactics.
The Teams Pursuit event continued the great rivaliary between Australia and Great Britain with the Australian Team taking the honours coming tantalizing close to the World Record/World Championship double only 0.7sec adrift of a perfect ride.
In the 25 km Points race the outcome came down to the wire with result not clear until the final sprint of the event. Kerby a Queensland and Australian Champion in this event revealed later that this was the toughest bike race he has ever ridden.
The three time Australian Representative turned his attention to the track cycling over the last six months after being selected in the Australian Track team. The intensive training regime provided by the Queensland Academy of Sport and the Australian Team coaches delivered the reward
The Queensland academy of sport rider will return to the Bay Wednesday and is looking forward to a sleep in, catching up with family and friends and a steak at the RSL before he returns to full time training.
CALENDAR
Club AGM
Last Thursday the Club held it's AGM.
First off I would like to sa ythat everyone should be most appreciative of the the effort and energy the officials lead by President Keith Soper invested in the club throughout 2010. The club calendar delivered great racing throughout the year and all the major events were very well run. The Interclub racing reached a higher level of participation and was well worth the trip north. More AGM News.....
